What Should You Do Before Your First Lash Extension Appointment? Things I Wish Every Client Knew

There’s something I’ve noticed after many years as a lash artist.

First-time lash clients usually fall into two groups.

The first group walks into the salon excited and ready.

The second group walks in with about a hundred questions running through their minds.

And honestly, I understand both.

Because if you’ve never had eyelash extensions before, the experience can feel both exciting and a little intimidating.

You’ll spend one to three hours lying down with your eyes closed.

Someone will be working very close to your eyes.

And when it’s all over, you’ll leave looking a little different than when you arrived.

That’s why I’d like to share a few things I always tell first-time clients.

Not to make you nervous.

But to help your first appointment feel as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

First of All: Don’t Worry Too Much

This is probably the most important advice I can give.

Come with clean lashes.

That means:

• No mascara
• No eyeliner

• No heavy eye makeup

The reason is simple.

Oil, makeup residue, and dirt can affect how well the adhesive bonds to your natural lashes.

Clean lashes are like a clean wall before painting.

Everything sticks better.

Avoid Too Much Coffee Right Before Your Appointment

This advice usually makes people laugh.

But I genuinely recommend it.

Too much caffeine can make you:

• More restless
• More sensitive
• More likely to blink frequently
• Less comfortable lying still for an extended period

It’s not a major problem.

But if it’s your first appointment, being relaxed makes the entire experience much easier.

Bring Inspiration Photos

This is one of the easiest ways to help your lash artist understand what you’re looking for.

However, there’s one thing I always tell clients.

Don’t only save photos you love.

Save photos you don’t like as well.

Sometimes that’s even more helpful.

For example:

• Do you prefer natural or dramatic?
• Do you like a cat-eye effect or a doll-eye effect?
• Do you want soft texture or maximum fullness?

A few photos can make a consultation much more productive.

But Don’t Become Too Attached to the Photos

This is something years of experience have taught me.

A lash set that looks beautiful on someone else may not be the best choice for you.

Give Yourself Plenty of Time

“I have a party at 3 PM, so I’ll come for lashes at 1 PM.”

That usually creates unnecessary stress.

Beautiful lashes take time.

Depending on the style, your appointment may last anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours.

If possible, leave yourself plenty of breathing room.

You’ll enjoy the experience much more.

If You Wear Contact Lenses

I usually recommend removing contact lenses before the appointment.

You’ll be keeping your eyes closed for a long period of time.

Many people find it more comfortable without contacts.

If necessary, bring a lens case and solution with you.

Tell Your Lash Artist About Any Allergies or Sensitivities

This is extremely important.

If you’ve experienced:

• Cosmetic allergies
• Adhesive sensitivities
• Sensitive eyes
• Skin conditions around the eye area

Tell your lash artist beforehand.

This information helps them choose the safest products and techniques for your situation.

Don’t worry about being difficult.

Professional lash artists appreciate knowing these things.
