How much capital is needed to open a nail salon in Europe? A realistic perspective after nearly 15 years in the business in Finland

When I started thinking about opening a nail salon in Finland, the first question was the same as most people: “How much capital is enough?”. At that time, I asked many people, read many forums, and the answer usually fell around 10,000 – 20,000€. It sounds reasonable, even seeing “within reach”. But in reality, when we started working, that number... is just the tip of the iceberg.

After more than 10 years of opening and operating nail salons in Europe, I can say frankly: the initial estimated capital and the actual amount of money you have to spend are almost always quite large. If you don't prepare carefully, it's easy to fall into the situation where “is working and runs out of money”.

Initial estimated capital – Beautiful number on paper

When planning, most people (including me in the past) will charge basic expenses such as rent, furniture, machinery and a little money to import products. If you work in a small shop, you can calculate a decent number of “pleasant”, for example about 15,000€.

At this stage, the general sentiment is to try to optimize costs to reduce capital investment. You think you can save by renting smaller premises, buying cheaper items, or doing a lot of things yourself instead of renting services. This is not wrong, but it leads to a big problem: you are missing out on a lot of hidden “costs.

Actual capital – When starting to refresh see “team up”

When you start opening a real store, you will realize that the cost does not stop at just visible things.

Rent for premises is not just a monthly rent. In Finland and many European countries, you usually have to deposit from 2–3 months rent. If the rent is 1,000€/month, the deposit alone is 2,000–3,000€. Not to mention many places require space repairs or renovations to meet business standards.

The salon renovation is one of the most easily underestimated items. At first you may think that you just need to repaint the wall and place a few tables and you're done. But in reality, you will have to make standard lighting, electricity, ventilation, and sanitary areas, not to mention aesthetic factors to attract customers. This cost can range from a few thousand to over 10,000€ depending on the level.

Next is the device and product. When first calculating, many people only think of nail tables, chairs and a few basic machines. But when you start doing it for real, you'll find a lot of small things are needed: from lights, vacuum cleaners, cleaning supplies, towels, consumables... These add up to no small amount.

One point that a lot of people don't take into account is the cost of “surviving” in the early months. When you first open a store, you almost certainly don't have customers right away. It can take 2–3 months, even 6 months to have a stable number of visitors. During that time, you still have to pay rent, electricity, water, insurance and personal living expenses. Without a backup, you will be under great financial pressure.

Biggest difference: Lack of contingency costs

If we have to point out the biggest difference between “budget capital” and “actual capital”, then that is the cost of redundancy.

In the past, I thought I only needed enough money to open a shop. But later I understood that opening a store is just the first step, maintaining a new store is more difficult. You need a sum of money for “to feed the ” shop during the period when there is no stable revenue.

In fact, if you count needing 15,000€ to open a shop, then you should prepare at least 20,000–25,000€. Not because you spend money, but because there are always expenses that you cannot predict.

Personal perspective after 10 years

If someone asked me now how much capital I should prepare to open a nail salon in Europe, I wouldn't give a fixed number. But I'll say this:

Don't ask how many“is needed at least, ask how much ” is enough so you don't get stressed when starting a“.

A small nail salon, made alone or 1–2 people, you can start from about 15,000€. But to do it more comfortably, with redundancy and less risk, a reasonable number will usually be in the range of 20,000–30,000€.

Conclusion

Opening a nail salon in Europe is not a far-fetched thing, but it is not as simple as many people think. The problem is not whether you have enough money to start, but whether you have enough resources to go the long way.

If you are preparing to open a shop, my sincere advice is to always add at least 20–30% to the number you have calculated. Because in reality, costs almost never go according to plan.

In this profession, skill is important, but financial preparation is what helps you survive long enough to succeed.
